Released on May 2, 2000, White Pepper stands as the most polished and accessible entry in Ween’s notoriously eccentric discography, serving as the duo’s final studio effort for Elektra Records. The title itself is a clever nod to the band’s obsession with The Beatles, specifically combining The White Album and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and the music follows suit with a sophisticated, technicolor production style helmed by Christopher Shaw. While Gene and Dean Ween are known for their “brown” lo-fi weirdness, here they trade home-recorded chaos for lush power-pop and psych-rock anthems, ranging from the shimmering, McCartney-esque melodies of “Stay Forever” to the distorted, Motörhead-inspired grit of “Stroker Ace.” The record expertly navigates a wide sonic terrain, featuring the tropical, Jimmy Buffett-style breeze of “Bananas and Blow” alongside the sprawling, psychedelic layers of “The Grobe” and the delicate, Mellotron-infused “Back to Basom.” By successfully packaging their surrealist humor and genre-hopping brilliance into a more traditional full-band format, White Pepper proved that Ween could compete with the heavyweight pop craftsmen of the era without sacrificing an ounce of their singular, Boognish-worshipping spirit.
